The decision to remove Bakish as CEO comes as Paramount Global closes in on a merger agreement with Skydance Media. A number of large common shareholders, including Gamco Investors, Ariel Investments, Matrix and Aspen Sky Trust have publicly criticized the deal, arguing it destroys value for common shareholders. Paramount Global shares jumped about 5% in premarket trading Monday. Typically, Paramount Global shareholders, such as Gabelli, would compare an offer to the standalone company's prospects — hence his comments about not seeing a sale at all. But by removing Bakish, Redstone and the Paramount Global board are now throwing the status quo into chaos.

New hires from across the country and abroad are snapping up just-built Spanish-tiled houses nearby, and schools are already adding semiconductor trainings. But on the other side of the fence, roadside vendors are doing brisk business opposing President Biden. Each morning, they hoist Confederate flags and lay out tables of Trump hats and crude banners deriding Mr. Biden. Arizona feels like a place where nearly all of 2024’s pivotal political clashes are converging. It is a border state bristling with active fault lines on abortion, inflation, immigration and election conspiracies, where vast demographic changes have shifted Arizona from reliably Republican and seldom contested in national politics to a desert hothouse.

Columbia University has given students until 2 p.m. on Monday to clear out from the pro-Palestinian encampment that has occupied a central lawn on its campus for nearly two weeks, warning them that they will face immediate suspension if they do not leave by then. Students in the encampment on Monday morning received a notice from administrators stating that negotiations with student protest leaders were at an impasse. It urged the students to clear out voluntarily to allow the school to prepare the lawn for graduation ceremonies on May 15. “The current unauthorized encampment and disruption on Columbia University’s campus is creating an unwelcoming environment for members of our community,” the notice stated. “Please promptly gather your belongings and leave the encampment.”

When I moved here in 1987, Nashville had two daily newspapers: a morning paper, The Tennessean, whose editorial page leaned left; and an evening paper, the Nashville Banner, whose editorial page leaned right. I recall with fondness that venerable newspaper, no matter that its editorial page did not align with my own politics. Today less than a dozen U.S. cities have two competing daily newspapers, and many communities have no local news source at all. It’s hard to conceive of a local newspaper, in print or online, that’s fully staffed and fully funded anymore. Gannett, the largest newspaper chain in the country, owns the daily newspaper in three of the four largest Tennessee cities, including The Tennessean in Nashville.

My Investment Banking Job Nearly Destroyed Me

I hadn't expected to be lying on the office floor thinking that I needed to quit my investment banking job — yet there I was. The allure of an investment banking job is seductive. Being an investment banking analyst was much sexier in theory than practiceI knew banking would be intense from the internship, but nothing could've prepared me for just how intense the full-time role was. There's very little advice out there on how to quit your investment banking job. I can't say I loved investment banking to that degree, so I walked away.

Tesla Reaches Deals in China on Self-Driving Cars
  + stars: | 2024-04-29 | by ( Keith Bradsher | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Tesla had faced a couple hurdles to offering the latest level of autonomous driving, which it calls supervised Full Self-Driving. It has needed approval from Chinese regulators, who questioned whether the company took adequate precautions to protect data. The government-linked China Association of Automobile Manufacturers later announced that Tesla and five Chinese automakers had obtained approval from authorities and the association for their data security precautions on dozens of car models. The rules bar automakers in China from using software that would identify the faces of anyone outside their vehicles, and include many other restrictions. Self-driving systems use cameras to guide vehicles.

Shannon Flynn Bevers, Tandem's president and founder, said that she tried to help employees but that Johnson stopped responding. "When startups go out of business, they will pay employees their final paycheck. Johnson told employees to take a weeklong furlough and blamed the issue on a technical snafu.
